The Senator representing Imo West Senatorial District, Senator Rochas Okorocha, has said that for Nigeria to win the war against insecurity, the government must address the growing concerns of poverty and hunger in the country.
This he said while supporting a bill sponsored by Senator Baru Jubrin, from Kano North, for the creation of a Federal University of Agriculture, Danbata.
Okorocha stated that he believes that nothing done to improve the Agricultural sector of the country, can be considered too much.
“I rise to support this bill for the establishment of the University of Agriculture, Danbata. As you would agree with me, there is nothing done to promote the Agricultural sector of our economy, that would be considered too much.
“I am quick to agree with Senator Barau, and to support this wonderful Initiative. This is what is called the people’s bill, because this has to do with the institution to address the poverty in our nation.
“Most of the time we argue about insecurity, and we discuss so many things about some of the shortcomings and ills in our society. The pivot upon which all the ills of the society rotate, is poverty and hunger.
“Once we can develop institutions that can address the modern way of farming and Agriculture, I think most of this insecurity we have in our nation will reduce to the barest minimum.
“The establishment of this institution is appropriate, especially in modern technology, on how to advance Agricultural produce.”
Senator Okorocha also urged the Senate to consider making Agricultural Science a compulsory subject for Secondary School Students seeking admission into Universities.
“I think we should come up with a motion sometimes, if we can make Agricultural Science a compulsory subject in all our Schools. As a subject including Mathematics and English, you must pass Agricultural Science, to be able to get admission into the University.
“The world we need, will not be built by men loyal to the world we have.”
