Professor Kingsley Moghalu Calls On The Federal Government To Take Over The Sole Responsibility Of Funding All Political Parties In Nigeria For A Level Playing Field, Argues “So That What Voters Are Deciding On Are The Issues, Not Who Is Giving More Money”

Professor Kingsley Moghalu, has on Friday, called on the Federal Government to completely take over the funding of all political parties in the country, Page 36 learnt.

He made the recommendation when he appeared as a Guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.

He argued that such move will give all parties, both old and new, a level playing ground in elections in the country among the voters.

He also criticised the current Delegate system used for party primary elections in the country, noting that most Delegates participate solely for pecuniary benefits.

Prof. Moghalu said: “One of my recommendations is that the government should fund political parties. This was done in the time of the SDP and NRC that Babangida set up, a little to the right, a little to the left.

“And I think if you look at how much the government spends on other things; we spend N4 trillion on petrol subsidy; do you think we would need to spend N500 billion on funding political parties? It is a policy and legislative choice. In many countries of the world, in Germany and Canada, the government funds political parties, so that what voters are deciding on are the issues, not who is giving more money.”
